Digging for Evidence:
Deepening Comprehension Through Fact-Based Questions and Responses
This action research project aimed at improving language arts comprehension skills in third-grade students through the use of evidence-based questions and responses. The central research question was: How can evidence-based questions and responses be used to improve third-grade students’ comprehension of grade-level language arts passages? Students engaged in reading activities integrating QAR question types, the use of evidence to support answers, composition of questions, and participation in peer dialogues. Results suggest that citing evidence for questions and responses and engaging in structured peer dialogue positively impacted students’ reading comprehension.
